Ho'oponopono, carefreeness + creativity
(hello from Hawaii)
I left Japan this past week. I’m heading back to the states to finish off the summer season.
So I decided to stop through Hawaii on my way back (splits up the trip nicely). I guess that’s what’s inspiring this post.
Ho'oponopono is the Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness.
I first heard of it from Aaron Doughty. But recently, I’ve been exploring the idea more and how I can apply in my own life. Maybe it’s the salty air here in Honolulu, but I’m feeling inspired by it lately.
Ho'oponopono has to do with forgiving your mistakes, being thankful for them (as invaluable lessons) and feeling epic love for having made them. It’s a deep appreciation for where you’ve been and where you are now.
These are healthy and elevated emotional states. Forgiveness, gratitude and love are amazing ingredients for more carefreeness and more creativity.
Or as David Lynch puts it:
“Anger and depression and sorrow are beautiful things in a story, but they are like poison to the artist. You must have clarity to create.”
This goes beyond just forgiving and appreciating my failures and obstacles (creatively or otherwise). It’s thanking them and loving them.
Creating and living from a place of gratitude and love is essentially manifestation. These are super strong creative emotions and work much better than the alternative (i.e., creating from a state of lack, lust, anger or regret).
So lately, I’ve been using ho'oponopono in my life. Here’s how:
Choose one thing you want to focus on (creative or otherwise)
Meditate on that one thing while reciting the ho'oponopono mantras (aloud or in your head)
“I’m sorry, I forgive you, I thank you, I love you.”
Feel each statement with strong emotion — take your time with it if you need to
Rinse and repeat
Being able to transmute regret, anger or any other negative clutter into a something positive is a serious superpower. And it leads to more clarity, more creativity and more chillness.
Good things — good things indeed.
Shitty moments, mistakes and frustrations don’t disappear altogether. But they can become lighter, less irritating and quicker to deal with. And that’s a solid W.
So with that, later ✌️
