How to know you're on the right path

A question was asked by a student:

How do I know if I’m following the right path, and not someone else’s?

The teacher smiled and responded:

When you look down, you won’t see the path.

I’ve been thinking about this idea/quote thing a lot lately. And it rings pretty freaking true.

Often, when you’re pursuing something deeply personal and authentic, you’re a trailblazer. There may be breadcrumbs here and there. But largely, you’re forging your own path. No one has walked the corridor you’re strolling down before.

This can make you feel lost. Like you’re on the wrong path (because there is no path to be seen).

But perhaps, this lack of clarity and direction is the biggest sign that you’re onto something real, something authentic and exciting.

It may not work out. But serendipity is a thing and dots connect eventually. Even the failed paths give you skills and insights otherwise missed.

Every wrong turn is a teacher.

So what’s the takeaway from this afternoon rambling?

Get lost. Explore. Don’t always follow the proverbial trail.

People will be confused. Some will judge. And many may be concerned — like family urging you to take a more stable route.

But to hell with all of that!

Do you. Create a path for others to walk down.

That’s all I’ve got today — now go explore and shit!

Later ✌️
