____ like there's no social media

(on being a happier creator/human)

I love creating. And making. Content creation should be easy.

But sometimes, I’m left hating this rating we call social media.

So I perform for this modern public theater in dichotomous ways.

I dance between passion and apathy — trust and distrust — participation and absence.

As a musician, writer and artist, I feel required to at least show up. So I share — haphazardly.

Tools, resources, absent gatekeepers should be boosting my creativity and my happiness, my carefreeness and my authenticity.

And yet, doubt, comparison and FOMO mixed with impatience are overtaking.

So I’m left wondering…with no accolades or metrics, am I truly an artist? A musician? A creator?

Intuitively, Self knows I am. Now if only I can drill this into my overthinking mind.

I’m not anti-strategy.

Tips and tactics are well-meaning and helpful.

But sometimes they make me forget to create and live for me, not for someone (or something) else.

___ like there’s no social media. You fill in the blank.

Live, love, create, write, dance, share, travel…

Whatever your verb is, do it like there’s no social media. As you know, you don’t need anyone’s stamp of approval.

Don’t attach your chillness, creativity or value to some external or algorithmic metric.

Here’s how:

  1. Stay aware

  2. Get into the habit of recognizing when you’re spiraling

  3. Shine a light on that feeling and practice resetting yourself

  4. Stay in the present

As a litmus test, I try to answer “yes” to questions like:

  • Was I fulfilled?

  • Was I challenged?

  • Did I feel aligned?

  • Did I express my true authentic self in this specific moment?

  • Did I get into a flow state?

  • Am I detached from performance and outcomes?

So get out there and do you.
